How We Pick the Perfect Hotel for Families (And Why It's Not What You Think)

Booking a hotel with kids isn't about finding the "best" resort. It's about finding the right fit. Here's exactly how we figure that out.


Most people search “best family resort” and book whatever has the most stars and the nicest photos.


Then they get there. And the pool is a half-mile walk from the room. The splash pad is tucked in a corner with no shade and nowhere to sit. The kids club is a room with an iPad and a bored teenager and mom hasn’t had five minutes to herself since the plane landed.


We do this differently. Here’s the actual framework we use when booking hotels for families with kids

Step One: The Room Situation


This sounds basic. It’s not.


There are really three options worth knowing about.


A luxury suite means everyone’s together in one beautiful space. Great amenities, one key, total simplicity.


A two-bedroom suite gives the kids their own room while keeping everyone under one roof. A little more money, but you get the shared living space and the separation. For a lot of families, this is the sweet spot.


Connected rooms keep the family close with a door between you. Ideal when you want the kids down early and the adults to actually have an evening.


All three work. It depends entirely on your family and how you like to travel.


So we ask upfront: Do you want simplicity, separation, or somewhere in between?


We also dig into the details most people never think to ask:

  • Can we actually guarantee the rooms are connected? (Not “we’ll try.” Guaranteed in writing.)

  • How far is the room from the pool, the beach, the restaurant? Two miles of walking with a toddler is a different vacation than you planned.

  • Is the hotel layout manageable, or are you hauling a stroller up three flights of stairs every time you leave the room?


Step Two: The Upgrades Worth Actually Considering


Most people think upgrades are just about a nicer view. When you’re traveling with kids, the right upgrade can change the entire dynamic of the trip.


A private plunge pool or terrace means the kids can splash while the baby naps inside.

No hauling everyone to the main pool for a 20-minute window. No packing up. Just step outside.


In-room dining sounds indulgent. With kids it’s practical. Once they’re asleep, you and your partner eat a real meal, have a real drink, and actually talk to each other. That’s not a luxury. That’s the point of the trip.


A higher floor or quieter wing means kids sleep through the noise. Small thing. Big difference at 6am.


A club level or concierge floor often includes breakfast and afternoon snacks. With kids who eat constantly, that adds up fast and saves more than it costs.


We talk through all of this before we book anything. Because the right upgrade for a family with a toddler looks nothing like the right upgrade for a couple.


Step Three: The Pool Situation (This One’s Everything)


The pool isn’t just a pool when you have kids. It’s the entire day.


We ask the hotel not just look at photos about the actual pool setup. Because a resort can technically have a splash pad and still make your life miserable.


Here’s what we’re actually looking for:

Zero entry? Can little ones walk in gradually, or is it a drop-off edge that requires constant vigilance?


Splash pad and where is it? A splash pad tucked in a corner with no seating and no shade isn’t a feature. It’s a punishment. We want to know: is there somewhere for parents to sit nearby? Is there a bar or a taco stand within eyeline? Because nobody wants to feel like they’ve been banished to the kids’ zone.


Waterslide? Great if the kids are old enough. Useless (or dangerous) if they’re not.


The taco bar question. This sounds silly. It’s not. When the splash pad is next to the swim-up bar and the taco stand, parents can genuinely relax while kids play. That’s a different vacation than standing at a splash pad with nothing around it for 90 minutes.


Step Four: The Kids Club (Big Variations)


Kids clubs range from genuinely incredible to deeply depressing.


We’ve seen kids clubs that are full-day supervised programs with nature walks, cooking classes, and age-grouped activities that kids ask to go back to every day.


We’ve also seen “kids clubs” that are a room with a TV, a coloring book, and a staff member who looks like they’d rather be anywhere else.


We ask hotels to send us their actual materials. Not the marketing brochure. The real schedule, the real capacity, the real age groups, the real supervision ratio. That tells us everything.


Step Five: The Big Qualification Question


Before we look at a single property, we ask families one fundamental question:


Are you looking for a kid-forward trip or an adult-forward trip where kids can also have fun?


These are completely different trips. And confusing them is how you end up miserable.


Kid-forward means the kids’ experience drives everything. The resort is built around them. Parents are along for the ride, happy to watch their kids light up.


Adult-forward means the adults want a real vacation. Good food, good drinks, some actual relaxation and the kids need to be occupied and happy, but it’s not a kids’ theme park.


Both are totally valid. They require totally different hotels.


Step Six: The Pain Point Conversation


This is the part most travel agents skip. We don’t.


We ask every family: What makes you nervous about this trip?


Because the answers tell us everything.

  • “My kids are picky eaters” We need a resort with flexible dining, not just a set menu.

  • “I’m terrified of my toddler crying at the quiet pool” We need a family-designated pool area, not a shared adult resort pool.

  • “My older kids get bored” We need a resort with teen programming or easy access to off-site activities.

  • “I just want to read a book for one hour” We need a kids club that kids will actually want to go to.


And the most important question we ask moms specifically:


How are you envisioning spending your time?


Are you planning to be with the kids the whole trip genuinely enjoying that? Or are you quietly hoping for a few hours of actual alone time, a real meal, a drink without someone asking you for something?


Because if it’s the second one, a kids club isn’t optional. It’s the whole point. And we need to find one that’s good enough that your kids will go willingly.
